Dual Diagnosis: Clinical Dilemmas in Assessment and Treatment

David Mee-Lee, M.D.

Workshop Content and Purpose

A large proportion of individuals suffering from alcoholism and drug dependence also suffer from psychiatric problems and vice versa.

Because clinicians often lack training in both addiction and mental health treatment, patients with co-morbid psychiatric and addiction illnesses frequently receive inadequate care, caught in the gap between the mental health and addiction treatment systems.  Clinicians can feel ill-equipped to face the increasing population of multiproblem and dual diagnosis patients.

The goal of this workshop is to increase clinicians' awareness about the clinical dilemmas in treating patients with the dual problems of psychiatric and addiction illness, and improve diagnostic and treatment strategies for such patients.

Educational Objectives

Participants will be able to:

1. Identify and discuss the attitude and value system changes required to work with dual diagnosis patients.

2. Sharpen their appreciation for the prevalence of dual diagnosis problems most commonly seen in treatment.

3. Develop diagnostic strategies, techniques and priorities to determine treatment options and interventions.

4. Identify and select treatment strategies appropriate to developing a treatment plan which meets a patient's individual needs and his/her readiness for change.

Training Methods

Didactic lecture with use of 35mm slides; clinical vignettes, role play and case consultation; question and answer session.
