Skill-Building and Advanced Application of the Revised ASAM Criteria (PPC-2R), Including Criteria for Co-Occurring Mental and Substance-Related Disorders (Dual Diagnosis)

David Mee-Lee, M.D.

Workshop Description:

Many clinicians already have some understanding about the ASAM Patient Placement Criteria. They strive to implement concepts of continuum of care, levels of care, and clinically-driven, individualized treatment. Yet they still struggle with how to use complex placement criteria. There is a continuing need to improve skills:
---to carefully assess clients in a multidimensional way;
---to document a more targeted,focused individualized treatment plan and
---to effectively state their case with supervisors, managed care and utilization review.

This workshop is designed to build skills in assessment, documentation and the implementation of a continuum of care using the newly revised Second Edition of the ASAM Patient Placement Criteria (PPC-2R). Greater explanation of the criteria and guidelines for Co-Occurring Mental and Substance-Related Disorders (Dual Diagnosis) plus the fully revised Adolescent Criteria will be given. In addition, specific hands-on exercises will be utilized to help clinicians practise implementation of the ASAM Criteria.

Nowadays there is increasing pressure for more specific documentation to justify reimbursement of services and to demonstrate careful assessment and tailored treatment planning. In this regard, participants will practise documentation skills that promote quality care, plus meet external expectations of managed care, CARF, JCAHO, and licensure requirements.

Educational Objectives:

Participants will:

(1 ) Learn how to organize assessment data to make proper placement decisions

(2) Use client case material to practice individualization of problems and treatment plans
(3) Learn how to improve the range of treatment services and develop service tracks using the assessment dimensions of the Criteria. Emphasis will be placed on those clients in early stages of readiness to change, and on dual diagnosis clients.
