How do you decide on the best type of training for your system?

Many organizations still enjoy the typical, on-site workshops where all staff can come together for a day (or more) to be trained.

On-site workshops have their advantages:

  • It is far less expensive than sending many staff members out to conferences with all the attached travel and accommodation expenses.
  • All staff hears the same concepts, and have a chance to build knowledge and skills together.
  • The training can be customized to the needs of the organization or target participant group.
  • Direct contact with the presenter allows more flexibility to address local questions and concerns.

A word from Dr. Mee-Lee......

In my travels as a trainer and consultant all over the US ( and internationally), I hear the same needs expressed. All types of providers and clinicians in the behavioral health field share similar concerns.

This is what I frequently hear:

>“I need ASAM 101.” What do you recommend?
Consider a one-day workshop:
The Revised Second Edition ASAM Patient Placement Criteria: Understanding and Using ASAM PPC-2R." See popular workshop training titles.

>“I have gone to trainings, but need ongoing supervision……….”
Investigate the ongoing March-June 03 Telephone–Supervision series.

>“We struggle with what forms to use to help with case documentation…”
In the very near future, look for a new Book of Forms, which will provide you with samples of forms, used all over the country.
But for the immediate, there are several excellent clinical instruments available currently used by programs all over the US and in some European countries.
Read about the LOCI, the RAATE, and the BEI. More are in the development pipeline.

>“We know the basic concepts of the ASAM PPC 2-R, have been using them, but our staff needs Advanced skills now.”
Perhaps you could benefit from the Advanced Skills Workshop.

>“Often I feel that my supervisors aren’t much ahead of the rest of the team. How can I improve my supervisors’ skills about individualized treatment and ASAM criteria?”
We launched an “Intensive Individualized Training for Key Staff” Summer 03. A second one was help late Fall 2004. It was attended by supervisors/heads of programs. If this sounds like something you’re interested in, express your interest and contact us. Tell us your specific and pressing needs with respect to this kind of training. This is a small enough group that the agenda can be easily tailored to your requirements.

>“How do I deal with dilemmas in assessment & treatment of dual diagnosis (co-occurring mental & substance-related disorders)?”
What about a Co-Occurring Disorders (Dual Diagnosis) workshop?

Or a Home Study Course on Dual Diagnosis presented by David Mee-Lee, M.D.
You can obtain CEU’s by taking this course.

However…………
Not every group has either the time or resources to offer take advantage of the on-site, face-to-face trainings with the frequency and regularity they would like to. With today’s convenient array of technology, there are more expanded ways to receive training never previously available.

Have you considered other training-workshop formats outlined below?

Sometimes these formats may replace the traditional on-site training and consulting. In other situations, alternative formats may support, extend, supplement or add strength to trainings you’ve already invested in.

You will probably find a format that can satisfy the needs of your system. Contact us. Tell us your initial thoughts on what your organization may need. We can then suggest a ‘fit’ for you between our services and your needs.
